Looking for a new place to walk or ride?

Bon Thomas Grasslands in Deer Park is a great place to get outdoors. It’s only a few minutes from Deer Park Station.

A shared walking and cycling path runs next to the railway line and through the grasslands. It’s great for exercise, a relaxing walk, or to enjoy nature. Along the way, you can learn about the native plants and animals that live there.

Bon Thomas Grasslands is part of one of the world’s most endangered ecosystems. It’s home to 24 native plant species, including the critically endangered Spiny Rice-flower. The grasslands also provide a home for many local animals.

Council’s Conservation Unit has cared for the grasslands since 2010. Their work has helped bring back colourful wildflowers and protect this special place.

You can enter the reserve from Railway Parade or Robinsons Road. As you walk through the reserve, you will see artworks in the footpath that feature local plants and animals. At East Grasslands, large kangaroo sculptures celebrate the area’s natural heritage and help visitors learn about the environment.

Keep heading west along the shared path to find two smaller grassland areas. These areas are home to native wildflowers, including the Basalt Copper-wire Daisy, and animals such as the Spotted Marsh Frog.

Spring and early summer are the best times to visit. Native wildflowers bloom across the grasslands, and the kangaroo grass changes from green to bright shades of purple and red.
