The Department of Health & Human Services (DH&HS) works to ensure the safety & well-being of adolescents & children at risk of harm, abuse or neglect. The Branch funds, supports & monitors services including Victoria’s child protection
service, residential & support services for children & adolescents in care, adoption & permanent care, family services, sexual assault, family violence, and the Victims’ Assistance & Counselling Program. Services, available through a network
of regional offices & funded agencies, provide safety, stability & assistance for children & young people up to 17 years old and at risk of significant harm so that they can develop the skills necessary for their future. Agencies work with families
to ensure the safety of children & young people. Services include investigation of child abuse, case management & support services for abused children & young people, placement prevention & support services, home- based & residential care, adoption & permanent care, and provision of advice to court. Access is available twenty-four hours, seven days a week via the after- hours number.
