Mental Health Court Liaison Service Consultancy and advice services on mental health problems are provided for Magistrates’ Courts and their users by senior registered psychiatric nurses with at-call back-up from consultant forensic psychiatrists. Services include on-site court-based psychiatric support services for defendants.
The service provides offenders with mental illness
access to appropriate treatment;
identification & assessment of mental health status & fitness to plead;
diversion from the criminal justice system;
reduction in the frequency & length of custodial remands to obtain psychiatric reports;
linking to appropriate mental health facilities in the community or prison system as appropriate; and
reassessment of the mental state of offenders with a known psychiatric history.
The service consults and networks with mental health services, professional services and family members involved in the offender’s care.
