Westgate Basketball began in 2012 as a 12-team youth competition at Whitten Oval in Footscray. By 2014, the club had entered its first Imperials team in the VJBL and in 2019 expanded its footprint to also operate at RecWest Braybrook.

Our association catchment in the Inner West suburbs of Melbourne includes some of the most disadvantaged communities in Australia. With increased costs associated with venue hire, paid referees and travel, many families are being priced out of having their kids play hoops.

Our competitions and programs provide players with pathways for progression consistent with their skill level and aspirations, including the ability to compete for the Imperials at a state representative level.

The Westgate Basketball Association is currently proud to have over 4200 members, in our under 8s through to open age competitions and programs such as Aussie Hoops. Westgate is supported by nearly 1,000 Inner West families and over 200 volunteer coaches and administrators who contribute to one of the fasted growing basketball associations in Victoria.

Today, Westgate’s youth competition hosts over 300 domestic teams, with 32 teams in the VJBL. In 2024, Westgate debuted in Big V with its Youth League 2 Men’s team, taking home the Premiership in our first season of the competition and moving up to Division 1 in 2025. Also in 2025 Westgate debuted a Women’s team in Youth League 2 giving our young athletes a pathway to play highly competitive women’s sport.

Westgate’s Open Age competition has over 60 teams, and the Aussie Hoops program regularly attracts over 200 kids each term.

With over 4,200 members, Westgate is one of Victoria’s fastest-growing basketball associations, recognized for high-quality programs and driven by dedicated volunteers.
